Is communication more than speech?
Yes. Nonspeaking or minimally speaking kids communicate in many ways: pointing, gestures, sounds, pictures, and AAC (augmentative and alternative communication), such as a speech app or picture book.
Research has not found that AAC holds speech back, and many speech-language pathologists recommend introducing it early.1
What are 5 ways to use visual supports?
- Match their AAC pictures. Same symbols across tools means less to learn.
- Show before you say. Hold up the picture, then say one word.
- Let a tap count. Any clear response is an answer.
- Start with two. A first-then board before a full schedule.
- Keep them within reach. Pictures only help if your child can get to them.
