- The exam is based on the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.).
- It's multiple choice, taken through Pearson VUE.
- Focus on applying concepts: prompting, reinforcement, measurement and ethics.
- Use practice scenarios, not just flashcards.
What does the RBT exam cover?
The exam follows the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.).1 The 2026 40-hour training marks which content appears on it, including:2
- Data collection: continuous and discontinuous measurement, calculating rate and percentage, reading graphs
- Assessment support: preference assessments, skill assessments, functional assessments
- Behavior-change procedures: reinforcement, prompting and prompt fading, discrete-trial and naturalistic teaching, chaining, shaping, differential reinforcement, extinction, antecedent strategies, generalization
- Documentation: objective notes, confidentiality, reporting changes to your supervisor
- Ethics: the RBT Ethics Code (2.0), multiple relationships, professionalism and your role
What's a good two-week study plan?
- Days 1 to 3: measurement and data. Practice calculating rate, duration and percentage.
- Days 4 to 8: behavior-change procedures, one or two a day, with your own examples.
- Days 9 to 10: assessment and documentation.
- Days 11 to 12: ethics scenarios.
- Days 13 to 14: mixed practice tests, then rest.
Which mistakes trip people up?
- Reading the whole question before looking at answers
- Asking "what would my supervisor want here?" on ethics items
- Practicing measurement calculations by hand
- Mixing up negative reinforcement and punishment
- Choosing answers where the RBT acts outside their role
- Rushing the last questions
