**Short answer:** All three are BACB credentials. An RBT (high school education) delivers services under supervision. A BCaBA (bachelor's degree) can do some assessment and program work and supervise RBTs, but must be supervised by a BCBA. A BCBA (master's degree or higher) practices independently, designs treatment and supervises the team.

**Key takeaways**
- **RBT**: high school education, **delivers services**, always supervised.
- **BCaBA**: bachelor's degree, **supports assessment and programming**, supervised by a BCBA.
- **BCBA**: master's degree, **practices independently** and **supervises**.
- Many people move **RBT → BCBA**, sometimes via BCaBA.

## How do the three credentials compare?

| | RBT | BCaBA | BCBA |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Minimum education | High school | Bachelor's | Master's or higher |
| Training | 40-hour training + competency assessment | Coursework + supervised fieldwork | Degree/coursework + 2,000 fieldwork hours |
| Exam | RBT exam | BCaBA exam | BCBA exam |
| Practices independently | No | No | Yes |
| Designs treatment | No | Under BCBA supervision | Yes |
| Supervises RBTs | No | Yes | Yes |
| Recertification | Every 2 years, 12 PDUs | Every 2 years with CEUs | Every 2 years, 32 CEUs |

## What does each role do on a team?

- **The RBT** runs teaching sessions, collects data and reports to the supervisor. See [What is an RBT?](https://theautismkit.com/guides/what-is-an-rbt)
- **The BCaBA** can help with assessments, write programs, analyze data and supervise RBTs, under BCBA supervision.
- **The BCBA** leads assessment and treatment design, trains caregivers, supervises the team and makes clinical decisions. See [What is a BCBA?](https://theautismkit.com/guides/what-is-a-bcba)

**Check your state.** Many states license behavior analysts and some license assistant behavior analysts. Payer rules also differ on which
credentials can bill for which services.

## Which path should I choose?

- **Want to start working soon?** RBT is the fastest way in.
- **Have a bachelor's and want more responsibility?** Consider BCaBA, but check local demand.
- **Want to lead clinical work?** Plan for BCBA.

**Try the work first.** Many BCBAs say working as an RBT first helped them understand the client's day and become better supervisors.

## What can I do next?

- [ ] Decide which credential fits your next 2 years
- [ ] Read that credential's BACB handbook
- [ ] Check your state's licensure rules

## Common questions

### Is BCaBA worth it?

It can be if you have a bachelor's degree and want more responsibility before or instead of graduate school. Check whether your state and local payers recognize BCaBAs, since demand varies.

### Can a BCaBA practice independently?

No. BCaBAs must be supervised by a qualified BCBA.

### Can an RBT supervise another RBT?

No. RBTs are supervised by BCBAs, BCaBAs or other qualified supervisors. RBTs can serve as assistant trainers in the 40-hour training, under a responsible trainer.
